Driving Innovation with Thermoplastic Composites

At Xamax Industries, Inc., we specialize in helping industries move forward with engineered thermoplastic composites designed to outperform traditional materials. These composites offer a powerful combination of lightweight performance, strength, and sustainability, making them ideal for applications in the automotive, construction, marine, and transportation industries.

Unlike thermoset plastics, thermoplastics can be repeatedly heated, reshaped, and reused, making them an efficient and environmentally friendly alternative for a wide range of structural and aesthetic applications.

An Overview of Thermoplastic FRP

Thermoplastic fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) combine high-performance polymers with reinforcing fibers, such as glass or carbon. This results in strong, lightweight composites with excellent mechanical and chemical properties. They resist corrosion, offer better impact performance, and significantly reduce weight—all while being recyclable and re-moldable.

Thermoplastics soften when heated and harden when cooled, and this process can be repeated without changing their properties, allowing the material to be easily re-molded and reshaped. By adding reinforcing fibers such as glass or carbon, thermoplastics become fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP), which are stronger, more durable, and able to withstand tough conditions. These composites combine the flexibility of thermoplastics with the strength of fibers, resulting in materials that are lightweight, resistant to heat and pressure, and mechanically reliable. This makes thermoplastic FRP an excellent choice for applications requiring both performance and durability.

Benefits of Thermoplastic FRP

● Exceptional strength-to-weight ratio
● Resistance to moisture, chemicals, and UV degradation
● Lower production and maintenance costs
● Recyclability and sustainability for circular manufacturing

Applications Across Industries

Thermoplastic composites are reshaping product performance and production standards in key industries:

● Automotive: Used in body panels, underbody shields, and lightweight structural reinforcements to improve fuel efficiency and design flexibility.
● Construction: Applied in reinforcement panels, formwork systems, and corrosion- resistant wall cladding.
● Marine: Incorporated into hulls, decks, and trim for water resistance, low maintenance, and long service life.
● Refrigerated Transport: Provides durable, hygienic, and scuff-resistant interior paneling for refrigerated trailers and vans.

Featured Solutions from Xamax

Xamax offers a broad range of thermoplastic composite surfacing and bonding solutions, including proprietary and patented products designed for next-generation applications.

FloLam® Series
Thermoplastic Laminates for CFRTP Systems & Sandwich Panels.

Patented under US 9,199,440 B2 & US 9,138,974 B2. The FloLam®, FloLam® PR, and FloLam® PR+ series are engineered surface laminates that deliver a smooth, durable finish over continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic (CFRTP). These layers provide not only cosmetic enhancements but also functional benefits, including:
● Reduced fiber print-through and void visibility
● Enhanced abrasion, stain, and weather resistance
● UV protection up to 15,000 hours (ASTM-G155 tested)
● Flame retardant and antimicrobial options are available.
● Color matching and finishes from matte to high gloss

FloLam®PR and PR+ include a release film that protects the laminate during processing. Whether you need a matte, satin, or high-gloss finish, FloLam® delivers consistent visual appeal and performance.

Surface Options
Our surface options include different product finishes and gloss levels. FloLam® is available with embossed or smooth textures and comes in matte or satin finishes without a release film. FloLam®PR offers a smooth finish in matte or glossy options and includes a release film. FloLam®PR+ features a smooth finish, also available in matte or glossy, and comes with a release film.

FloVeil® PNR Surfacing Film
Permanent PET Film for PP-Based Composite Protection.

FloVeil® PNR is a matte white PET surfacing film engineered to bond to polypropylene- based CFRTP substrates and honeycomb sandwich panels permanently. Unlike surface coatings or adhesive films, FloVeil® PNR forms a destructible covalent bond during the lamination process—creating a seamless, protective surface layer that cannot be removed or delaminated.

Key Features:
● Improves surface appearance by hiding voids and print-through
● Provides UV resistance >15,000 hours, ideal for outdoor exposure
● Protects against staining, weathering, and cosmetic degradation
● Available in multiple thicknesses (1.9 mil to 4.0 mil)
● Supplied in widths up to 120 inches for full panel coverage

FloVeil® PNR enhances both the aesthetics and longevity of composite systems used in automotive, marine, and architectural applications—offering a cost-effective solution to elevate product performance and durability.

FAQs

1. What’s the difference between FloLam®, PR, and PR+?
FloLam® is the base film for protection. PR adds a release layer and a better finish. PR+ gives a premium matte or gloss look, ideal for Class “A” surfaces.

2. How does FloVeil® PNR bond to polypropylene?
It utilizes a surface treatment that chemically bonds during lamination under heat and pressure, ensuring a strong and lasting adhesion.

3. Is UV resistance the same across all products?
Yes, FloLam® and FloVeil® PNR are both UV-stable, with durability tested up to 15,000 hours (ASTM G155).

4. Can they hide surface defects?
Yes, they reduce print-through, mask voids, and improve panel appearance for better surface quality.

5. Are custom features available?
FloLam® can be tailored with pigments, flame retardants, UV blockers, and antimicrobial additives.
